Pokerstars Puts Professional into Lower Staked Sit and Go’s
April 29, 2009
Bertrand Grospellier, 3rd place finisher at the recently finished WPT Championship 2009 announced that he was going to make a bid to play a record number of sit and go’s within one hour.
Grospellier decided that he would play $6.50 sit and go tournaments, multi tabling as many as he could within one hour.
The decision to take this challenge meant that players with a smaller bankroll could place themselves up against one of the leading names in the poker industry at the moment, with Grospellier cashing a career total of more than $5.7 million.
With the increased standard within the tournaments that the pro will be playing, Pokerstars the site behind the professional, has revealed that all players who buy into the sit and go tournaments alongside the professional will be offered entry into a $1,000 freeroll tournament.
The players bid to make the record books shouldn’t be too hard due to no record been held for the task to date, so no matter how he does he will make history.
Although there is no record set for this task i have recently read about a player who played at Pokerstars and laid out a bet that he could make $100 into $10,000 purely by playing as many sit and go tournaments as he needed within the hour time scale he set himself.
The amatuer player took bets against him to succeed in his task but in front of the eyes of all who watched his webcam feed, he succeeded.

California Considers Move Towards Legalisation of Online Poker
April 28, 2009
With the huge legal battle surrounding the legalisation of online poker very much in full action it seems that the first state that is considering passing a legalisation bill is California.
Within the bill there was an report looking into the popularity of the pass time, revealing that billions of dollars was been spent on online poker websites but the sites were off shore and unregulated by the US government.
The state currently allows its patrons to play live poker tournaments within the state but has been holding off on allowing those players to do exactly the same while playing online.
This has raised questions about the government that is currently in place as many members of the public are seeing that as a ‘double standard’, allowing players to gamble at live tournaments but not allowing the online poker players to wager money.
The draft legal bill issues a statement that says:
It is in the best interest of the state and its citizens to authorize, implement and create a licensing and regulatory structure and system to allow licensed gambling establishments to operate government-regulated Internet poker wagering Web sites.
The bill pointed out that the state felt that is should allow online gambling but only if they could offer better online protection for its players with the aid of the ‘gambling establishments that function online’.
The bill would mean that existing gambling establishments that are already licenced by the state would be granted the licencing conditions allowing online gambling but new sites will not be granted a licence.
The Bureau of Gambling will be in charge of creating an agreement between the two parties, California State and Online poker rooms, that will remain within the guidelines that have been set out in the UIGEA that was created in 2006.
With this news becomng public, the state have also moved to say that the granting of the licences to such online gambling sites will spark new security measures with underage gambling been one of the main concerns.
We think that this a a positive move that is been considered by the Californian governement and hope to see this bill made offical sooner rather than later.

Timoshenko Takes 2009 WPT Championship
April 27, 2009
With the 2009 World Poker Tour Championship now at a close, we can reveal that 21 year old Yevgeniy Timoshenko won the tournament.
In a game that took over 8 hours and thousands of hands to complete, Timoshenko made his statement within the live poker scene, claiming his third live tournament victory in a short period of time.
Timoshenko also has winner titles within the Irish Poker Open and the APT Macau Main Event, both of which have been won within the last months.
Seated at a table with some of the biggest names on the poker scene, with Scotty Nguyen, Shannon Shorr, Bertrand Grospellier, Christian Harder and Ran Azor joining him at the final table.
With previous wins ensuring that the 21 year old was taking home six figure prize winnings this tournament sent his cashes into orbit, taking home $2,149,960 in winnings.
This win makes his other victorys seem like they were won in a friendly, home played game with friends in comparison to this, winning a life changing amount.
Runner up fell to Ran Azor, who also upped his game to ensure that he was within the heads up section of the tournament.
But Timoshenko wasn’t the only winner on the day, Bertrand Grospellier’s 3rd place finish meant that he secured the World Poker Tour Player of the Year award, beating out bookies favourite Scotty Nguyen.
The biggest shock of the day had to be that of Scotty Nguyen, the bookies favourite to take the victory, been knocked out in 6th place by Christian Harder in a hand that will surely have left a bitter taste in the confident players mouth, watching his set of aces beaten out by a higher kicker.
Nguyen’s 6th place finish meant that he didn’t make history as had he taken the first place in the tournament he would have been poker’s all time highest cash winner.

Scotty Nguyen Has Shot at Making History at World Poker Tour Championship
April 24, 2009
This years WPT championship winners place could be a whole lot more special for one player.
Scotty Nguyen would make history if he was to take down the tournament in first place, winning $2,149,960 at the tournament which is been held at the Bellagio.
The win would mean that Nguyen would become the player that had won the highest amount of cash in poker of all time, taking his winnings to $12.6 million.
The current title is held by 2006 winner Jamie Gold who has a total cashing at $12.1 million to date.
The prospect of becoming the new all time poker player who won the most cash playing poker is some thing Nguyen is willing to play for, saying:
That’s my goal. That’s what I promise the poker world and the fans.
The player is definately one that has alot of confidence in his own ability, stating earlier in the year at the Poker Classics that if he didn’t make $4 million by the end of 2009 World Series of Poker, he would quit poker.
Nguyen is so sure that his ability will lead him to exceed that figure that he has wagered a bet with Mike Matusow, another professional poker player, that he would succeed in his goal, getting 3 to 1 odds.
Nguyen said:
He’s dead, Count on it baby, he’s dead.
Although he enters the final 10 without the chip lead, Nguyen isn’t panicing about that saying:
I’m just going to play Scotty Nguyen style, baby, fearless, baby, fearless and confident.
Confidence is high with Nguyen and he was quick to say:
Think about it, how many people do you know who will look straight at the camera and say ‘I will win four million dollars this year’? None. I’m the only one. That’s why they have people betting on me five to one, four to one, three to one, you know, baby? I take it all. “Whoever wants to bet against me, I take it all. I told you, this is my year.
On thing is for sure, this is action that all poker fans will be watching very closely.

As the hand played through Minieri found himself behind as the flop fell, hitting a Q, little did he know that the hand was covered at this point, with the hand ending with his opponent taking the pot due to an ace high flush, narrowly missing out on an ace high straight flush.
As with many of the live tournaments, events happen that are unforeseen, with Minieri been hottly tipped to build on his final table finish last year.

World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1 Part A
April 19, 2009
The WPT World Championship is often thought to be one of the biggest tournaments of the poker tournament calender.
This year featured the same breakdown as the original tournament featured, breaking the starting day into 2 days, part A and part B.
Part A started today, featuring a disappointing 126 players entering the tournaments buy in. It is thought that part B will feature more players than its earlier part, but still participation numbers are expected to be well below last years turn out.
Although there was a disappointing number of players who turned out, the deck dealt out some hands that made the excitement surrounding the felts alot more intense.
There was a straight flush and a set over set dealt out today, with crushing blows been dealt to players all day.
The straight flush fell to Andy Bloch, taking down a huge 185,000 chip pot, with his final re-raise of a ‘all in ‘ call left his opponent so sure that he was beaten that he folded leaving him with only 17,000 chips.
On the ‘fold’ call Andy Bloch let his opponent know that he had done the right thing, turning over 2/3 diamonds, which sat into the community cards offering Bloch one of the best hands possible.
Many others saw their treasured hands fall to better hands with a number of pocket aces been over turned by its lower counterparts and sets been beaten by stronger sets.
The might have been a small turn out for the tournament but the drama was not to have been missed!
