Irish Open Poker Championship Organisers Show Unneeded Concern
April 13, 2009
Due to the recent economical events happening across the world, the organisers of the well attended Irish Open feared for its participation figures this week.
The recession has hit alot of tournaments and companies all over the world, reducing the income that they would usually receive.
The organisers were expecting a drop in the participation figures in the tournament, with 667 players turning out for the tournament last year.
But as the tournament opened it became clear that their concerns for the figures were uncalled for, with 701 players turning out to take their seat at the felts.
The registration of the 701 players means that the prize pool for the tournament reaches €2.2 million.
The reason behind the great turn out for the tournament was the work that the dedicated team of organisers placed into the setting up of the tournament after one told of how much work they had to place into the promotion of the tournament to avoid disappointing numbers.
But the turn out was something that even they didn’t expect with Paddy Power host Paul Burke saying:
A lot of poker players don’t have the same disposable income they had this time last year. If we had got 600 players we would have been very happy.
Almost half of the entered players were from overseas, showing that the attraction to play in the tournament was great to even players from the likes of Canada, with one car sales man taking the trip to buy into the tournament.
When asked why he had been attracted to travel the distance to enter the tournament, he simply said that the thrill of playing poker is the winning.

71 Year Old Boots Takes Home Poker Victory
April 10, 2009
Most pensioners play cards down at their local working mens club or card room, placing tiny wagers if any but not this pensioner.
Boots Batson developed a liking for Texas Hold’em while on a visit to the Golden Nugget Casino, Las Vegas.
Batson developed a strong interest in the game, leaving behind all of her previous favourites, taking up taxas hold’em poker as her preferred game.
Batson found joy as she entered into a ladies only $1,000 buy in no limit poker tournament on an unexpected visit to Las Vegas.
Boots admitted that she isn’t the best poker player in the world, saying she likes to play the game as it keeps her sharp of mind.
Her skills aren’t totally useless as this victory shows but other players in the tournament picked up on the lack of cutting edge thought that you see in many of the high level tournaments these days.
One fellow poker player said
She is a pistol
An absolutely sweet lady who is a good player
Her ability to do well despite her dyslexia is amazing
Batson has won a seat into the main event for the World Series of Poker due to winning the tournament, something which she was going to take a back seat from due to the $10,000 buy in to enter.
We would like to congratulate Boots on her victory and hope to see her at the final table in the main event!

Misclick Proves Costly Even For The Professionals
April 7, 2009
Daniel Negreanu, one of the highest regarded players at the poker tables this week tells about how he was playing in a $1000 No Limit poker tournament and he lost out due to a misclick.
It just goes to show that even the poker ‘greats’ sometimes experience their fair share of bad luck.
Negreanu tells how he was playing poker from the comfort of his sofa at home and then the worst thing imaginable happened.
Negreanu was sitting in 4th place in a $1000 no limit hold’em poker tournament when he was dealt suited connectors 3/4 of spades, seeing the pot raise past what he was prepared to wager on the hand he got up from the sofa, only to see that on his movement from the sofa he had accidently placed all his chips into the pot, all 330,000 of them!
Knowing that this wasn’t going to end well all Negreanu could do was watch as two other callers entered into the pot.
The flop sealed his hands fate as one of his opponents reveals A/K diamonds, seeing the flop his three diamonds.
The crushing blow didn’t spell the end of the tournament for the poker professional but did leave him in a position that he didn’t want to be in, time to fight back he decided.
Then lady luck really took a hold on Negreanu as he walks with his laptop to the bathroom after 12 hours of poker play.
On his way back to the safety of his sofa the connection to the poker client freezes leaving Negreanu sat out through the blinds, costing him almost half of his remaining chips.
Once back connected to the client he finds himself at 32nd in the tournament with only 34 remaining.
With Negreanu feeling let down by lady luck at this point, he sees his 66,000 chip deplenish into a visit to the rails.
Just goes to show that all those times amatuer players experience the same fate, professionals get it too.

Cake Poker Offers World Series of Poker Entry Seats
April 7, 2009

Cake Poker, an online poker room has launched a promotion to allow some of its players the opportunity to gain entry into the World Series of Poker (WSOP).
The promotion is the only one of its kind, offering entry into the tournament to players who are playing real money cash games.
The ‘Golden Card’ promotion offers players who are playing real money ring tables the opportunity to fall lucky, with the chance to win a gold card just for playing at the table.
The player doesn’t even have to place a stake into the pot, just be dealt into the game and on the show down or winning of the pot the software will randomly generate a gold card, granting access into the tournament.
So there are no entry tournaments, no freeroll’s just good old reward for players who are placing a wager over their virtual felts.
The cards are generated by the software dependent on the rake received by Cake Poker, so for the best chance of getting one of these much sort after cards players should play as higher stakes as they can afford as the more rake the room makes, the more cards there are for that stake level.
This is going to shake up the online poker room promotions surrounding this huge tournament with what is thought to trigger a huge give away from many of the other poker rooms on the internet.

Devilfish Poker Offer World Series of Poker Seats
April 2, 2009
With World Series of Poker soon to show its presence within the live poker calender, Devil Fish Poker are offering a massive 7 seats into the tournament to its members through a number of tournaments held at the online poker room.
This will alert many players who are looking to win their way into the tournament to avoid paying in the full buy in for the tournament, aiming to win their place at a fraction of the price.
The Devil Fish Poker promotion will run until May, with the traffic at the site expected to hit its highest this year.
One downside for players who are thinking about making the move over to the site to try their hand at the Devil Fish tables is that the site doesn’t accept US based players due to legal issues surrounding it.
With that been actioned many non US players will be buying into the tournaments and registering into the freerolls that offer the package as a prize.

World Series of Poker Gold Circuit Title Heads To Brooklyn
April 1, 2009
A poker player from Brooklyn won the recent WSOP “Gold Circuit” tournament this week taking home a prize of a seat in the World Series of Poker main event and $125,775.
Dwyne Pilgrim bought into the $5,000 no limit tournament held at Harrah’s Rincon, winning his second “Gold Circuit” tournament.
After winning his first title Pilgrim told supporters and others that he would return to play another WSOP “Gold Circuit” and would become champion once again.
This is a promise that he upheld, taking home the title and first place in the Rincon near San Diego.
Pilgrim made a name for himself after winning his first tournament back on March 7th 2009, raising interest in the player. This interest meant that poker fans all over the world, as well as writers were aware of the players presence.
The Brooklyn resident only started playing live tournaments last December and has made a huge impact already, one poker crytic wrote:
Dwyte Pilgrim’s previous successes came in the form of six previous cashes, five of which took place at the December 2008 WSOP Circuit event at Harrah’s Atlantic City. Indeed, Pilgrim had five cashes during that ten day tournament series – which is a stunning accomplishment given the sizes of many tournament fields in Atlantic City. It appears Dwyte Pilgrim is a player to keep a close eye on in the months and years ahead. A not-too-bold prediction: Burgeoning with self-confidence, a blossoming bankroll, and obvious natural talent, tournament poker has not seen the last of Dwyte Pilgrim.
The latest win by Pilgrim shows that although there was a huge mixture of amatuer and professional poker players, he can still mix it up with the best of them over the two day tournament.
Pilgrim wasn’t the only player to take home cash winnings, with the top 9 players all receiving payouts.
Pilgrim managed to get the better of second place finisher Esther Taylor as the two pressed hard against each other at the final table, when a flurry of winning hands fell for Pilgrim giving him the edge to which he took to his full advantage.
Taylor accepted the runner up position with grace and elegance, congratulating Pilgrim on his play but who wouldn’t knowing that they would be cashing out with over $100,000 in tournament winnings.
Pilgrim took the victory in good humour jokingly saying
To know me is to love me
But then the two times “Gold Circuit” winner fired a warning to all professionals and amatuers out there saying
Now look out, i’m shooting for the gold bracelet
With impressive play like Pilgrim’s we are sure that we will hear more from this “live tournament rookie”, offering a hidden amount of talent and passion.
We at ThatsGambling would like to congratulate Pilgrim on his win and hope to see him at the final table at the next World Series of Poker Main Event.
