Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari Joins Casino Player Magazine
May 13, 2009

Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari, the young professional who has cashed millions in poker tournament winnings, has this week agreed to join the Casino Player magazine as a columnist.
The move comes as the number 1 publication in North America tries to broaden its appeal to gamblers by offering poker as well as casino game based articles.
Casino Player Publications decided that in order to maintain the high quality that is already offered by the magazine to its readers, they would only look to include professional poker players who could write regular columns for the magazine.
Esfandiari said
I’m excited to come onboard as a columnist for Casino Player. This magazine has had a huge following for many years, and right now it looks sharper than ever. In order to stay on top at the tables, you can never stop learning–and whether you’re a casual player or a pro, every issue of Casino Player contains a wealth of information that is designed to give you the edge.
With Casino Player making this signing, they next looked to highly respected poker ambassador and brother of the famous Mike Sexton.
Tom Sexton will debut in his first issue by writing an article in memory of his late friend and poker legend, Chip Reese.
With two columnists already onboard the magazine decided that they needed to offer readers more… Give the readers exactly what they want to read.
With the worlds best video poker player Bob Dancer, media director of the World Series of Poker Nolan Dalla and Frank Scoblete, who is seen as the leading craps authority in America all writing for the magazine, the chances of the magazine receiving extended reputation is expected to be very high.
Managing editor Rob Wiser said
Our readers range from the industry’s top executives, to celebrity pros and everyday players who want to know about the latest events, promotions and deals. Now, by adding Antonio Esfandiari and Tom Sexton to the mix, this publication is stronger than ever–and with 21 years under our belt, that’s really saying something.
You can definately say that again Rob.

Aced Poker and Jamie Gold Go Seperate Ways
May 12, 2009
When Aced Poker came into the online poker world, they decided that they needed a well known spokesperson in order to be able to compete with some of the bigger names in the online poker room community.
Thinking carefully about their choice, they finally decided that they should approach none other than the 2006 World Series of Poker world champion, Jamie Gold.
After speaking to the former world champion the two drafted up a contract for the professional and Jamie Gold was announced as the face of Aced Poker.
This undoubtedly fired the Aced Poker name way up into the sky and onto the radar of online poker players all over the world.
The taste seemeed to be so sweet until the bubble burst, with the next announcement set to rock the world of online poker.
Jamie Gold had stated at the time of signing the contract with Aced:
Aced and I plan to leave our mark, not just on poker, but on the world.
With that statement out in the public eye, Gold got off to a great start by winning the Dream Team Poker title within weeks of signing the contract.
The taste suddenly turned sour when players noticed that the Jamie Gold Bounty tournament schedule was removed from Aced Poker’s tournament scheme and rumours started to circulate about the reasoning for this.
The reason claimed by Jamie Gold’s management is that Aced Poker did not honour its financial responsibilies that were outlined in the contract that Jamie Gold signed.
This has sent huge concerns to Aced Poker members, feeling that they are now going to be part of a site that is going to take a turn for the worst after all the promotion and work that had gone into the site to launch it as high as it has reached so far.
Aced Poker are now having to rethink their spokesperson carefully, knowing that another mistake like this could cost the site dearly.
It should be noted though that Aced Poker are considering placing a law suit to the courts regarding comments made by Jamie Gold’s mamnagement team, claiming that they had made slanderous comments about the site in order to reduce the sites popularity.
Gold doesn’t seem to upset by the split from the site though, signing up with Poker Icons, a poker agency.
Jamie Gold said:
I’m very excited about joining Poker Icons. Their international presence and expertise in poker makes this relationship fit perfectly. I’m really looking forward to this partnership.
Gold has now been part of two online poker rooms with Bodog Poker been his first home. They cut him loose from his contract due to an ongoing legal suit that was going on with the player, with the questions been related to if he made a hand shake agreement with a friend before the World Series of Poker in 2006, saying that he would share his winnings.
So i guess the question is, how long will this one last Jamie?

May 8, 2009
With the massive buzz surrounding the FTOPS tournaments every year, held by Full Tilt Poker.
With the tournament starting this week the first winner of the FTOPS series has been crowned as URBEHIND.
URBEHIND took the FTOPS first event beating Quietwinner to the first place position, winning $191,020 in prize money.
With the tournament carrying a $200 buy in, places were expected to be limited due to the sheer regard that the tournament is held within the online poker community.
The participation numbers for the tournament showed exactly why it was thought that places would be limited with 4,445 players buying into the first event that paid out 492 winning spots.
With the tournament taking a little over 12 hours to complete, the heads up competitors found themselves entering into the final stretch of the event with almost equal chips.
The battle was fought tiredlessly and finally after been able to take 2 million of Quietwinner’s chips, URBEHIND got what he had been waiting for.
With a pair of 3’s in the pocket, Quietwinner moved his 3 million in chips into the pot on his all in call.
URBEHIND thought for a moment and then made the call with king / seven, dealing out a coin flip that could either win the event for URBEHIND or place him into short stack.
As the cards looked to run dry the flop dealt Quietwinner a shattering blow, showing a 7 on the river.
URBEHIND took the victory on a rivered pair of sevens.
Quietwinner won’t be too heart broken though, with $117,000 been paid out to take away some of the pain.
The FTOPS event was only the first of 25 events that will take place in total and if this first event is anything to go by the remaining 24 are definately going to have alot of shocks and excitement.

Lawyer Tries To Borrow Money To Play Poker
May 5, 2009
A court this week ruled in favour of a financial lender over its borrower in a case that has been ongoing since October 13th 2005.
The case was due to the borrower, also a lawyer, trying to borrow funds from LLC, a financial service to the value of $250,000 at an interest rate of 18 percent.
The lawyer, Michael J. Melkersen borrowed money through his company that he described as
A serious law firm.
With the loan accepted Melkerson later returned to the firm to ask them to increase the borrowed sum to $500,000 which was then declined with an auditor ordered to review the books of Melkersen’s legal firms books.
With the suggested increase in funding been rejected Melkerson was told that he should look to get signatures of people who would be willing to guarantee the loan on his behalf due to LLC wanting to protect their investment.
Melkerson’s wife agreed to guarantee the loan with her signature and was sent into the LLC offices with the paperwork.
The lenders again refused to accept the loan on this signature and told Melkerson that he would have to find another signature in order to make his application strong enough to even be reviewed.
The borrower turned to a family friend who signed to say that he would also guarantee the loan.
Melkerson was hoping that the doctor’s signature would help to strengthen his application for increased borrowing but again the lender returned the same verdict.
The situation become worse for Melkerson with the auditor concluding is research into the financial spending of the borrower, feeding back to LLC that it was believed that Melkerson had been using the borrowed funds to enter into high stake poker games.
LLC acted quickly on this information, contacting Melkerson to advise that not only are they denying the application for increased borrowing but they are also calling in the current loan due to a breach of contracted terms and conditions.
Melkerson said
Counsel Financial decided not to extend my line or renew it because it believed I was using its money to play poker in violation of my contract.
I was not aware that I could not take personal draws from the Counsel Financial line in a reasonable amount, nor was I aware that there were any restrictions on how I used my partnership draws or otherwise spent my personal funds.
Melkerson addressed the poker playing in question saying
I had been successful in that endeavor for many years, and therefore, my activity in that regard was always done with an expectation of a profit and improving my personal financial situation.
A closer look into the online poker community showed that Melkerson was ranked 3,828th on the World Series of Poker website, showing that his poker playing ability was definately there.
With laws been sketchy to say the least regarding borrowed money funding gambling, the case has taken a considerable amount of time to be concluded, with an increasing amount of case emerging every year.
A law in Navada, USA states that a casino may take a player to court in a bid to reclaim debts aquired by a player but the protection for the player is not the same, with players not legally able to take casinos to court to collect winnings.
With questions been raised about the lending of funds via a loan to fund gambling, many lenders are increasing their paperwork in a bid to deter players from borrowing funding to enter into gambling situations.
The fact that Melkerson had stopped making payments on his borrowings meant that the court sided with the lender, with the borrow now having to find the funding to repay the loan in full.
