71 Year Old Boots Takes Home Poker Victory

April 10, 2009

boots batson wins world series of poker main event seat Most pensioners play cards down at their local working mens club or card room, placing tiny wagers if any but not this pensioner.

Boots Batson developed a liking for Texas Hold’em while on a visit to the Golden Nugget Casino, Las Vegas.

Batson developed a strong interest in the game, leaving behind all of her previous favourites, taking up taxas hold’em poker as her preferred game.

Batson found joy as she entered into a ladies only $1,000 buy in no limit poker tournament on an unexpected visit to Las Vegas.

Boots admitted that she isn’t the best poker player in the world, saying she likes to play the game as it keeps her sharp of mind.

Her skills aren’t totally useless as this victory shows but other players in the tournament picked up on the lack of cutting edge thought that you see in many of the high level tournaments these days.

One fellow poker player said

She is a pistol

An absolutely sweet lady who is a good player

Her ability to do well despite her dyslexia is amazing

Batson has won a seat into the main event for the World Series of Poker due to winning the tournament, something which she was going to take a back seat from due to the $10,000 buy in to enter.

We would like to congratulate Boots on her victory and hope to see her at the final table in the main event!

World Series of Poker Gold Circuit Title Heads To Brooklyn

April 1, 2009

Dwyne PilgrimA poker player from Brooklyn won the recent WSOP “Gold Circuit” tournament this week taking home a prize of a seat in the World Series of Poker main event and $125,775.

Dwyne Pilgrim bought into the $5,000 no limit tournament held at Harrah’s Rincon, winning his second “Gold Circuit” tournament.

After winning his first title Pilgrim told supporters and others that he would return to play another WSOP “Gold Circuit” and would become champion once again.

This is a promise that he upheld, taking home the title and first place in the Rincon near San Diego.

Pilgrim made a name for himself after winning his first tournament back on March 7th 2009, raising interest in the player. This interest meant that poker fans all over the world, as well as writers were aware of the players presence.

The Brooklyn resident only started playing live tournaments last December and has made a huge impact already, one poker crytic wrote:

Dwyte Pilgrim’s previous successes came in the form of six previous cashes, five of which took place at the December 2008 WSOP Circuit event at Harrah’s Atlantic City.  Indeed, Pilgrim had five cashes during that ten day tournament series – which is a stunning accomplishment given the sizes of many tournament fields in Atlantic City.  It appears Dwyte Pilgrim is a player to keep a close eye on in the months and years ahead.  A not-too-bold prediction:  Burgeoning with self-confidence, a blossoming bankroll, and obvious natural talent, tournament poker has not seen the last of Dwyte Pilgrim.

The latest win by Pilgrim shows that although there was a huge mixture of amatuer and professional poker players, he can still mix it up with the best of them over the two day tournament.

Pilgrim wasn’t the only player to take home cash winnings, with the top 9 players all receiving payouts.

Pilgrim managed to get the better of second place finisher Esther Taylor as the two pressed hard against each other at the final table, when a flurry of winning hands fell for Pilgrim giving him the edge to which he took to his full advantage.

Taylor accepted the runner up position with grace and elegance, congratulating Pilgrim on his play but who wouldn’t knowing that they would be cashing out with over $100,000 in tournament winnings.

Pilgrim took the victory in good humour jokingly saying

To know me is to love me

But then the two times “Gold Circuit” winner fired a warning to all professionals and amatuers out there saying

Now look out, i’m shooting for the gold bracelet

With impressive play like Pilgrim’s we are sure that we will hear more from this “live tournament rookie”, offering a hidden amount of talent and passion.

We at ThatsGambling would like to congratulate Pilgrim on his win and hope to see him at the final table at the next World Series of Poker Main Event.

Recession? What Recession Says Online Poker Industry

March 31, 2009

RecessionWith many of the worlds industries feeling the pinch due to the global recession one online poker room has stepped forward to prove not all industries have been hit.

888, the company that own Pacific Poker have announced that their profits have increased by 6% this financial year, totalling $48.6 million.

The company do admit that the last quater of the financial year has seen a decrease in profits, costing them 4% leaving the total increase at 6% instead of 10%.

With the company 3 months into the new financial year, they have seen a lower profit margin than they saw in the disappointing final quater of last years financial year.

The company still insist that the number of new players is “encouraging” for the new year, with new business plans already in the pipeline to improve their already high rated business.

With this in place Gigi Levy, Chief of 888 moved to tell the world that the company will pass through the recession unscaved:

Whilst remaining cautious in our outlook we are confident our customers will continue to enjoy our services and that the overall strength and resilience of the business will ensure we weather this turbulent period well.

Just as we managed to grow market share after the industry was hit by the closure of the US market, we are confident we will outperform the market in these challenging times and continue to grow our business.

It just goes to show that the recession hasn’t hit every industry in the world, but there are more casualties then there are winners here.

Poker Pros Challenge Obama to $1 Million Poker Game

March 7, 2009

Bluefire Poker has made a move to prove that poker is a game of skill, not luck amid the questions been asked by U.S officials as they consider whether poker should remain illegal.

Professional players from Bluefire Poker made the challenge to Obama, or one of the U.S. congress in a bid to show them that poker is more about skill than luck, hoping that a win would help prove information to help the congress into making a decision in the on going case to prevent online poker gambling.

The pro’s have made the challenge on the condition that if the congress are successful in the challenge, Bluefire will donate $1 million to charity.

Billy Murphy, Bluefire Poker said:

“Specific terms of the game haven’t been set yet. However, the format will include an equal number of chips at the start of the game, and the opponents will play long enough to demonstrate the advantage of skill in the game.”

“Poker prowess and experience demonstrate themselves over time – in the long run, the better player wins the game because the player’s skills increase the odds of success.”

Bluefire don’t expect to get an acceptance from the U.S. congress or from Obama himself, but the challenge has already generated alot of interest from other parties.

As court rooms come to their decision, the offer will remain on the table for acceptance.

Bluefire place the ball firmly back into Obama’s court…

Do you feel that the congress should step forward and take some first hand experience?

What do you think to the story?

US Clarifies Agreement With European Union

December 24, 2007

The European Union came to an agreement with the United States last week which resulted in the EU being compensation by the US. The agreement enforced the US to open it’s doors to warehousing, courier services (Fedex) and the testing services to the EU for the ban that was imposed on the online gaming market.

Within 24 hours of the agreed compensation package the US has stated that certain areas of the agreement were not black and white and thus clarrified items as to what they will be offering. The proposed postal services is one of the these areas. Currently the United States Postal Service has already allowed foriegn markets to handle overseas mail for the last 20 years. With this new compensation plan, the EU has only made these services legal and binding and nothing will change from the current status as it is. This means that domestic delivery and storage at ports and airports would remain closed.

An official added that this had “real value” and the EU agreed. “It gives the sector legal certainty. There is real value in binding the commitments,” said the EU trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson.

A USTR official said it was “a rebalancing of legal commitments”. Nao Matsukata continued with “If they have agreed legally binding commitments that must have the approval of Congress as they do not have fast-track authority. I would expect to see congressional leaders taking a look at this,” he said. His firm works for a financial services company with interest in the case.
