2009 Los Angeles Poker Classic Adds to Arguement
February 27, 2009
The 2009 LA Poker Classic, won by Cornel Andrew Cimpan has added into the on going arguement that haunts the poker gaming world.
Is poker a game of skill or of pure luck?
Questions have been asked due to the recent winner claiming his victory.
Cimpan, who was pitted against Binh Nguyen on the final table, rode his luck for everything that he could, playing 117 hands on the final table.
It seemed that Thursday was his day, as he entered into hands with inferior hands, only to beat Nguyen, through what can only be discribed as luck.
Binh Nguyen entered the final table heads up with a 8:5 ratio of chips to Cimpan, taking that lead further to owning 11 million of the 14 million chips available only for the tie to shift leadership, with Nguyen been sucked out hand after hand.
Cimpan, from Texas, started off heads up, with a huge task ahead of him, then something changed for the Texan as he hit runner runner to make a flush, almost totally wiping out Nguyen’s stack to a slim 1.1 million chips.
The final hand dealt another cruel blow to Binh Nguyen, as he places his tournament life on the line with A9 off suit, only for Cimpan to call with K5 clubs.
None of the crowd were suprised to see the flop as it falls and drops a 5.
Binh Nguyen could do nothing but sit and watch as the turn and the river show nothing for him, leaving Cimpan to claim victory from a pair of 5’s.
Cimpan walks away with $1,686,760 in prize money, a WPT bracelet, a $25k seat in the WPT’s World Championship this April, and the Commerce Casino’s trademark horse and rider trophy.
Not a bad days work as it shows that sometimes skill is not enough to ensure justice.
Do you feel that poker is a skill based game or do you have more experience of a game thats more luck than skill?
